Prokopata is a small village near Argostoli, the island’s capital. The settlement was established on the top of the hill before the earthquake, but it was rebuilt in the current safer location after 1953. There is still a source of drinking water in Prokopata, which is considered to be among the best in Kefalonia. In the village, one can find a small number of accommodations and at the next village, Razata, a mini-market, and a few nice taverns.
Prokopata is one of the oldest inhabited areas of Kefalonia, as excavations in the area have brought to light findings from 4,000 BC. During World War II, the Italian commanders of Kefalonia settled Italian troops in Prokopata and built shelters, which can still be seen today.
