Kountourata is a small village, located in the municipality of Leivatho, on the island’s southern coast. It is built between Spartia and Pessada, a little harbor that connects the southern Kefalonia with the north coast of the Zakynthos. It lies 15 kilometers from Argostoli, Kefalonia’s capital.
The settlement is lowland and near the sea. Kountourata’s beach is beautiful, with golden sand and clear blue water.
Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Kountourata, so the church of the village is dedicated to him. The church was severely damaged by the 1953 earthquakes that flattened the island, but it was reconstructed with the help of the local community. The temple is magnificent, with a painting of 1888. Saint Nicholas of Kountourata had previously been destroyed by fire, according to the marble inscription on the courtyard, therefore the 1888 structure was the second, and the current structure is the third.
