The settlement of Agia Eirini, also known as Arakli, is located in southeastern Kefalonia. There are two explanations for this ancient name: The first associates Agia Eirini with the mythical hero Hercules, who once came to Kefalonia and whose name has remained slightly altered to this day – inhabitants may see a statue of him in the village square. According to the second explanation, it is a misspelling of the word “Heraklion,” because Agia Eirini was formed by Cretans from Heraklion who emigrated here.
Visitors will be impressed by the natural beauty of Agia Eirini: the verdant plain, torrents fed by the flowing waters of Kefalonia’s mountain, plane trees, as well as three springs with gargling and refreshing water, are images that are not frequent in the islands.
Agia Eirini is close to several of Kefalonia’s most popular tourist destinations, including Skala and Poros, as well as the settlement of Tzanata. In the summer, the village is bustling with residents returning home and visitors to Kefalonia who come to appreciate the natural splendor.
